Blog #1: APL, Inc. Brief Summary:July 2014 by L. Carolina Tavárez Varela

The year 2014 marks our second anniversary of hard and rewarding work in Haiti. This project was born thanks to the UCD Blum Center PATA grant in 2012, and today many Haitian children receive free language classes in the areas of Anse-á-pitres and Banane.
Ann Prepare Lavni, Inc (APL) has not only reached these families through education, but also via basic food and public health. APL believes that every human being should have a mental, spiritual, and physical balance in order to achieve their academic and personal goals.

As founder of APL it fills me with great satisfaction to see our students’ progress. During my first week here I've seen their school performance, and I'm very proud of our teachers and the skills possessed by the young students to learn English and Spanish with easy fluency. During these two years, more than 5 American universities have sent their students to volunteer in our organization. Also, last year we were able to provide our first medical clinic, in which over 100 parents and children received free eye exams and glasses. This year, thanks to the contribution of the UCD Blum Center PASS grant, we are about to complete Phase # 1 of construction of the first town library.
The future of this nation seems to be brighter, full of hope; and APL wants to be part of it by focusing on the welfare of the country: education, language, and public health. Our mission is to expand this pilot throughout the entire country in order to reach more students, and to create a healthier, stronger Haitian nation one student at the time. Stay tuned for my next blog on my training at Harvard Medical School, Partners In Health, and various clinics in Haiti. Stay in tune for my next blog on my training at Harvard Medical School, Partners In Health, and various clinics in Haiti.
