I’ll start with the negative of today. My MetroCard stopped working. I guess when I was bussing back from Riverside with my co-worker yesterday, the bus that scanned my monthly unlimited card damaged the black strip on it. Now I can’t use it anywhere. The worst part of it is I paid in cash since the teller didn’t accept debit/ credit cards and IN ADDITION refused to give me a receipt.
Why didn’t I go to a kiosk? Lines were ridiculously long and that day, many of the kiosks did not accept bills. My friend was once a victim of identity theft because of those kiosks so I didn’t want to take any chances that day. Apparently, MTA doesn’t offer protection for unlimited cards paid in cash… which is frustrating, but I am hoping to get a refund tomorrow through the Customer Service place in Lower Manhattan since it wasn’t my fault.
In terms of the rest of my day, it was great working with other student interns that are planning the Fatherhood Image Film Festival in August! The event’s intention is to show to the public fatherhood in a positive light. I was collaborating with them on ideas on how to market the event (which definitely takes me back to the Interact days when we had to plan charity dinners and events especially since the interns just graduated from high school :) ).
It seems like they know a lot and are passionate about this event. When talking about what this event meant to them, one of the students said that it was a reminder of how her father is such a great provider for her and her family. He is selfless and always puts his family before himself. A great analogy that she mentioned was, “you know, whenever I look at family photos, my father was never really in the picture, but really, I forgot that he was the one that took the photo".
I could tell that she was getting emotional and it is truly amazing to see how fathers can have a great impact on his child. Another intern mentioned he never really had a father figure in his life and wanted to show others how that affected him growing up. I’m so sad I cannot attend this event since I’ll be gone by then, but I am excited to continue to work with them to make sure this event is a success!
Tomorrow I will be going to a block party in the Bronx with STRIVE in order to network with other nonprofits in the community. I’m definitely excited to blog about it tomorrow! :)
